Practical Caravan Top Sites for Castles May 2005
Edinburgh has long been a favourite with tourists from around the world and Mortonhall, five minutes from the city bypass, could not be better placed for taking advantage of the city’s vast cultural, historical and leisure opportunities.
The park is part of the privately owned Mortonhall Estate, a working estate with its own rich history. It is a parkland site with first-class facilities spread over a slight slope. There is excellent bus service from the park gate to the city centre. Except for some breeds, dogs are welcome.

Practical Motorhome Independent Site Reviews.
Mortonhall Caravan Park lies on the south side of the city of Edinburgh on Frogstone Road. It is clearly signposted and easily accessed from the southern bypass. This is a very large park, owned and run by a private company with several wardens, each with specific responsibilities. There is a total of 400 pitches, of which the fully-serviced pitches, and hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up, are mainly used by caravans and motorhomes, although increasing number of tent campers now request hardstanding with hook-up. The touring warden tries to group together people with similar interests as they arrive. Refurbishments are being undertaken, so at off-peak times, certain areas and some washroom facilities may be closed off. Most pitches are serviced by tarmac roadways, although a few have gravel surfaces. Many of the existing grass pitches will have been converted to hardstanding for the 2004 season with roads upgraded accordingly. There are several open play areas with two well-equipped areas fenced off for younger children.
The modern, purpose-built toilet facility buildings have long, low-angled roofs and are surrounded with decorative shrubs. The original old stable blocks are still in use and accommodate a range of facilities: the main all-season toilet block, the kitchen area, the launderette and drying facilities, and the games room.
The site’s main draw is perhaps the Stables Bar, complete with log fires in the winter, and patio-seating in the summer months. It offers a reasonably priced menu, tasty pub grub and vegetarian and kids’ options. The adventurous can even sample the Scottish national dish of haggis.
Buses to and from the city centre stop at the site’s entrance, and full timetables can be obtained from the reception. This site will suit caravanners of all ages and interests, and can easily accommodate large motorhomes and RVs. As a popular site, advance booking is always advisable.
